This morning I decided I'd had enough of struggling along with vBindex...it's served me well, but it's clunky to use.
So on a whim I have installed and tweaked vBadvanced, and this is how I have got it looking:

Guests should be able to view the portal ok, though we do have a hard coded hack that stops full viewing of threads....to get round this should you need to, username is guest and password is guest.
My site doesn't use 'news' in the normal way...instead my portal is designed to showcase recent threads in most forums, which can of course be posted by anyone. Thus, the one problem we do have is the fact that quotes in the first post in the thread bugger up the formatting unless the whole post is displayed. I realise this is a well documented issue, but I keep seeing mention of a workaround hack which I cannot find. vBindex handled it ok, so I am guessing there must be something that can be changed.
Anyway...not bad for an afternoon's work I don't think. :)
