This is the one thing remaining to keep me from moving over from vBIndex ...
Anyone started working on this ?

you can have a shoutbox regardless of your portal - check vb.org.

Sorry - to clarify I wanna retain the shouts from the vBIndex shoutbox, and the layout (or as close to) the one I use currently ...

vbindex creates a table in the database for it's shoutbox - i'm doubtful anyone is working on linkin it up with other shoutboxes or a shoutbox module for vba cmps. :(

Hmmm ... thanks then ...
Anyone else - who might actually be thinking of working on a shoutbox for vBA ? I'd much appreciate it :D (despite the doubts of wasser here)

Or even an integration module to one of the released ones on vb.org to where it showed like the last 5 shouts, and let you add some there in the format similar to vbindex?
Then it wouldn't be as much a matter of writting a ton of code that creates, edits, and all that as pulling, linking, and adding info... right?
I'm a noob at php so guessing :P

I'm actually surprised that one hasn't been created by now. Shoutboxes are incredibly popular. vbportal's shoutbox set the standard IMO.
I've been trying to integrate a couple other shoutboxes w/ CMPS...but it's very slow going for me...
Been playing with: Tag-board (http://www.tag-board.com) and PaBox (http://webdevelopment.the-new-world.com/index.php?main=detail&id=24694)

Been using tag-board for a couple weeks now. I've noticed that sometimes their servers are VERY slow. This will cause long load times for your browsers. Also, once they were done for 24 hours. I had to remove the module. I think it is best if it is a temp solution...we need a better one.
Mine is here: www.onlinedebate.net

It's down again, right now. The entire "tag-board" system. I don't think this is a good way to go.
Im interested in shout box as well... this would be a great implementation..

I have it completed and ready for release. You can see it in action here: www.onlinedebate.net.
Since it is not a free hack, I don't think I can discuss it much here at vbadvanced.com. You can pm me or just visit this thread if you want it: http://www.onlinedebate.net/forums/showthread.php?p=40011
PS I wish I could offer it for free, but I can't because I had to hire a freelancer to help with the code. The cost is only $5. I'm not out to make money, just to break even or at least, come close to it. ;) My communities use shoutboxes so much, that to not have them on a portal, is a great disappointment to many members. I got tired of no one having enough interest to code a CMPS shoutbox, so I tried to do it myself. I couldn't, so I used external shoutboxes (Tag-Board, jaweezi, ShoutBoxPro, and about 11 others). I eventually gave up on them because I want something that is integrated with vb....I don't want just anyone who wanders by to enter random shouts, and I don't want my members to have to register a login just for a shoutbox. vb integration was a must. Thus, I hired a freelancer to help w/ what I had started and where I got stuck. It was worth it (even if I don't break even here) as I definitely needed that shoutbox. ;)
Full instructions are given in the thread how to buy. There is also an important README section...that you should read PRIOR to buying.
Hopefully, someone will create a shoutbox that is free and doesn't require the existence of another shoutbox first (mine requires a successful install of BVShoutbox (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=63562) Full found at vb.org).

apokalupsis, does your hack require the use of iframes??

I use BV shoutbox for my 3.0.3 and it works great. I ported it to vba cmps too. I didn't use any hacks for my shoutbox module. I just use template and make minor modifications to it and put the shoutbox in center column and it works great!
Here's my demo:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/martin7983/vbacmps-with-shoutbox.gif
Sorry I can't attach the file because it's too big (~183KB). Here they only allow a 20KB max.
If you guys want my template adv_portal_shoutbox code used for the shoutbox in vba cmps, I will put it up here soon.
Regards,
MT

Hey Emtee,
It would be great if you could put the template and some instructions up here!! :) :D

First step:
Add a new template called "adv_portal_shoutbox" (without the quotes) with the content shown below:
<!-- start shoutbox -->
<form action="shoutbox.php" method="post" onsubmit="return validate(this);" name="shoutform">
<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td class="tcat"><span class="smallfont"><strong>$vba_options[portal_blockbullet] Shout Box</strong></span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1"><span class="smallfont">
<iframe src="http://www.yourforumurl.com/forum/shoutbox.php?$session[sessionurl]do=iframe" width="100%" height="120" scrolling="yes" frameborder="0" name="shoutbox" id="shoutbox"></iframe>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</form>
<!-- end shoutbox -->
Optional: If you use the /ˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉ\ for the top and \_______________/ for the bottom to make the module looks nicer (like I do with my modules) then you can use this code for the "adv_portal_shoutbox" template instead of the one above:
<!-- Start optional -->
<!-- start shoutbox -->
<form action="shoutbox.php" method="post" onsubmit="return validate(this);" name="shoutform">
<! -- the cute stuff -->
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td>
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
<tr>
<td><img src="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/foreverblue/corner_left.gif" alt="" border="0"></td>
<td class="tcat" width="100%" style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/shoutbox.php? target="_blank">Shout Box</a>
</td>
<td><img src="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/foreverblue/corner_right.gif" alt="" border="0"></td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<! -- the cute stuff -->
<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td class="alt1"><span class="smallfont">
<iframe src="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/shoutbox.php?$session[sessionurl]do=iframe" width="100%" height="120" scrolling="yes" frameborder="0" name="shoutbox" id="shoutbox"></iframe>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<! -- the cute stuff -->
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td>
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
<tr>
<td><img src="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/foreverblue/emtee_bottom_left.gif" alt="" border="0"></td>
<td width="100%" background="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/foreverblue/emtee_bottom_bg.gif" valign="middle" align="center"></td>
<td><img src="http://www.YourForumURL.com/forum/foreverblue/emtee_bottom_right.gif" alt="" border="0"></td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<! -- the cute stuff -->
</form>
<!-- end shoutbox -->
Of course you change the name of the corner images that you use with your forum.
<!-- End optional -->
Next step (Optional) : Locate "shoutbox_newmessage" template (for those who don't know where it is!)
shoutbox_newmessage is under Shoutbox Templates, and Shoutbox Template is just above Show Groups Templates)
Next step: In "shoutbox_newmessage" template, find this:
<input type="text" name="message" value="" size="70" />
Change the value size="70" to size="60" or less so it won't push the Shout button to the next line in the portal page and display only half of the Shout button.
If you want to see what I meant, don't change the value size="70" yet and see it in the portal and you'll understand. Then change it, see it again and you'll see. Personally I use size="60" so it will look best on my site with 1024x768 resolution.
Final step: Add the module to the portal
Go to AdminCP, vBa CMPS -> Add module
Module Title: Shout Box
Module Identifier: leave blank unless you know what you have a use for it.
File to Include: don't touch this one
OR Template to Include: shoutbox
Active: click on "Yes"
Colum: Center (Note: Because this is design for center column only!)
Display Order: 3 (or whatever order you want to use)
Templates Used: adv_portal_shoutbox
Update All Pages? Yes (it's default)
Check box the usergroups you want them to see this module. I just check all of them and it's default so basically you just leave it alone.
Click Save
You're done!
I put every single piece of information here already. It's really easy! If you can't make it work then I'm here to help, but then you must read the book "Webmasters for dummies" !!! :D :D :D

Tried installing this ,but would you believe I done something wrong??? :D
Basically ,I get the shout box on screen ,but I cant actually use it. I have to click on where it says shoutbox, that then takes me to the shoutbox.php and I can enter text there. Thats not right is it?
Also I have no Shoutbox_newmessage template
I have
SHOUTBOX
shoutbox_iframe
shoutbox_iframe_shoutbit
shoutbox_shoutbits
shoutbox_topshouters
Edit:
If I use the first lot of code ,then I cant click on "shoutbox" and go to shoutbox.php
only if I use the code with the .gifs at the corner
