After much discussion, if I didn't have links to worry about, my "upgrade" path to 3.5. woiuld be to do a fresh install of 3.5 and apply all my changes in code, templates, etc to new install and then import from org install to new install. The reason for this is to minimize the amount of time the site is actually down. I can re-install hacks, mods etc at my leisure and then only be down while I import.
So the question is, can I do something similar for the vb links?

The vBa Links data is stored in the same database as vBulletin itself so as long as you copy the entire DB from the old install to the new install then you should be able to just re-upload the Links files (don't forget to change the config file) and then run vbalinks_install.php and choose the upgrade option.
To minimize the downtime on my sites I took the Eva2000 approach (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158122) and it went very smooth.

A site im working on is not exactly live but I did want to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5 and I have a few hundred links already added. I followed a simpliar approach to what Eva2000 suggested and it was painless.
