user defineable portal

Has anyone made a portal where their users could choose which forums to have the latest posts displayed from?

or a portal where users could choose which modules to show on the page?

I think it would be pretty cool for users to have some ability to customize the page themselves, but also for administrators to choose certain modules which are shown no matter what.

I don't see this being too hard, simply create a profile field asking them yes or no for each field then use an IF statement to declare whether the module would be declared or not.
