What is a module shell template?

I swear, I searched and searched and searched to try to find out this on my own, but I just can't find anything that explains it.

What is the Module Shell Template?
What is it for?
When would I choose yes and when would I choose no?
Possibly, if I even understand it's purpose, I could then understand what the rest of it means (module link, title row colspan, form code)

The module shell template is your adv_portal_module_shell template. It's "wrapped" around all default CMPS modules so that you can easily change the look of all of your modules by only modifying one template.
