If so, could you share with us? I have installed pabox here (http://www.ravensrealm.net/pabox/pabox.php) and would like to add it to my portal.. Any thoughts??

Hey,

I got this to work in cmps. I will attempt to explain. I found the below code on this site from superball.

<!-- Shoutbox Block -->
<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td class="tcat"><span class="smallfont"><b><font color="#4A2906">$vboptions[blockbullet]</font> <font color="#663C0C">ShoutBox</font></b></span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="$getbgrow"><span class="smallfont">

<center>
<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan --><IFRAME bgcolor="#FFFFFF" src="http://whereyouputtit/pabox.php" width="145" height="200" frameborder="0"><!--webbot
bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan --></IFRAME><!--webbot
bot="HTMLMarkup" -->
</center>

</span>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
<!-- End Shoutbox Block -->

Go to your admincp. Click on styles and templates. From the dropdown box click add new template. In the title field add a title with adv_portal_(whateveryouwanthere). So for instance adv_portal_pabox. In the large template field copy and paste the above code and make the following adjustment. Where "http://whereyouputtit/pabox.php" is make sure you put in your specs for your site and where you installed pabox. Then click save. Go to your vBa cmps admin area and click add module. Fill in the Title field. In the OR Template to Include field, put whatever you named the above created template minus the adv_portal part. So if you named the template adv_portal_pabox just put pabox. I think you can put the whole thing in just not sure. Make sure the active box is checked to yes. Don't forget to specify where you want the block to be displayed left, center or right. Click save. It should be working. It will probably look funny, so you will probably need to edit your adv_portal_pabox template and adjust the width, height and border parts of the code.

I hope this helps you and thanks to superball for the code.

Sweet! *runs to install right away!* ARGH...

I did it EXACTLY as you instructed. If I preview the template it looks sweet. Create the module and it wont show!

Hmm..

make sure you named the template adv_portal_(whatever), edited the path where your pabox is located. (make sure you left the ' in) and in the module area make sure title, and OR Template areas are filled in. and you activated the block.

I copied your code including the:
<!-- Shoutbox Block -->
<!-- End Shoutbox Block -->

Like I said, it Previews beautifully. I create the module and it just won't view
Module Title: Shout Box
Or template to include: adv_portal_pabox
Active: Yes

Viewable to ALL

Yeah, it should be. try putting in the full template name in the module area. adv_portal_(whatever you named your template)

I looked at your site with firefox and there is something on it that is causing the left hand site of your site seem big. it pushes everything else to the right and makes the site look bad. Just thought you should know.

I hope you get the shoutbox working.

Under Template to Include I put adv_porta_pabox it should have been just pabox. LOL
Now I just have to make my Module the same size as the rest of them..

Thanks for the offer & help

no that was a typo. the name was adv_portal_pabox. Entering that didnt work. When I entered just portal it worked. Now If I could figure out how to get rid of the bottom scroll bar I would be set.

yeah.. i am having a problem with that too. I did find another Shoutbox. MYSHOUTBOX.COM . Its hosted for you though. I added this one to my site and it works with no bar. I am going to use this until an offical vbadvanced one is bad (if ever). If you decide to use this go there and the page will apear in German. Click the Multilingual link on the left to make it english.

I've tried PaBox. Didn't like the lack of vb integration, and the fact that anyone could just come along and post, under anyone else's username.

I've modded a shoutbox specifically for CMPS. You can see it here: www.onlinedebate.net. Unfortunately, I can't offer it for free, but it is very cheap. ;) http://www.onlinedebate.net/forums/showthread.php?p=40011#post40011

Dude if it's a stable mod PM me the price I'll pay as long as it is not too much. And I dont need to mod like 10 files to get it up. :P

After you install the required shoutbox from vb.org...my mod requires 1 file upload and 4 new templates. That's it. Done in 2 mins. ;)

Click the 2nd link in the post above for more info. Click the first link in the post above to see it working.

Apok', you either give too much information away in that posting or I'm reading it wrong and am over-simplifying in my head what exactly the custom work was. :o

There are 2 parts to getting the shoutbox installed on CMPS. 1) Install the BVShoutbox FULL from vb.org. Once that is done (and only once it is done), should you use my hack if you want a shoutbox to be used on the CMPS homepage.

BVShoutbox FULL only creates a FORUMHOME shoutbox...nothing more. My mod creates the CMPS Homepage shoutbox.

I am very specific about the details in that referenced post...because I don't want anyone coming back and saying "it didn't install a shoutbox" when they missed the entire BVShoutbox FULL install that is required. Mine only allows for that particular shoutbox to work on the front page, that's it.

lol over-simplifying the code required? What exactly are you over-simplifying? If it IS the code, then I encourage you to create and release it for the public as it could be offered for free (as mentioned in my post, I don't like having to charge the small fee for it...but I don't really have that much of a choice).

<sigh> Fine.....

OK, what version of VB you running? With 3.0.3 I'm getting...BVShoutbox has not been tested on your version of vBulletin, therefore it is recomended that you do not continue with this installation!

Edit: Dang! After reading the full vb.org thread I'll think I'll do a full backup first before trying to install it under 3.0.3.

;) the install instructions for his hack are a little outdated, but they DO still work. You have to get around some of the copy code first though.

The hack works on 3.0.3. See my board referenced above.

I tested this on 2 dev sites first, then took it to a live site. No problems.

What I'll do is finally get around to installing a test install of VB and do the hack install on that one. I figured I was going to have to do that sooner or later so after reading that full thread I think the time has come. :)

OK, revision #2 is now ready.... http://www.farpointstation.org/forumstest

The amount of modifications required is really dependent upon how & where people want to use the shoutbox. At it's simplest somebody could make modifications to just the templates and be up running with it in a vBa CMPS module in just a matter of minutes. I ended up having to touch the code in the end, though, because I wanted to retain the original look & feel of the box when it is displayed at the top of the forums but at the same time I wanted a different look & feel for when it is displayed in a vBa CMPS module. The code revisions aren't pretty (given more time I'd have done them a bit more intelligent) but they (so far) appear to work.

If anybody is following along and wants the code and/or templates just let me know.

Edit: If anybody wants to play around with it use test/test.

Apok',

I saw you visited. Looks like I'll have to register over at ODN to see how you have it set up for registered users. :p Yeah, the colors thing is bothering me a bit. Even though the code is 'done' it's not visually eye catching.

Most likely I won't have another night to play with it again until the weekend. :(

Kevin

Edit: Yep, you're right, looks better with the input box at the bottom. And I just realized that the color scheme is coming from the default skin regardless of which skin the user is actually using. Don't know if I'll be able to over-come that one, though, since the box is using an iframe that is totally independent of the encapsulating document.

just use:

test/test
or
llama/llama

to login to either of my sites. :)

Regardless of what you came up with, it's a great start. People can either pay for a finished product now (mine), or use yours to try to finish up the code...or just deal w/ the fixed color scheme for a while. At least people have options...that's good.

Too late.... :p You can kill the KW802 account if you want.

For the colors I was hoping that you had some different skins installed so I could see if the colors were dynamic instead of using only the default style. The original templates are hard-coded so a quick solution is to change them to use the table classes instead but then if a user switches styles it'd still still use the defaults.

Last night I was on the road for a few hours so by the time I got home I had a few ideas on how to both (a) clean up the code a bit from the current revisions and (b) get the styles to be dynamic. I'm setting a self-imposed deadline of Sunday night to either get it all working; after that the code will either be released as is (working but non-dynamic colors) if there's any interest or all I'll add it to my list of other 'never-to-see-the-light-of-day' learning projects.

apokalupsis
08-25-2004, 05:25 PM
Yes, the colors are hard coded, but shouldn't be too difficult to use styles using vb's .css. I have 3 modifications of the shoutbox's colors. ODN, a gaming site (that I will announce soon) and my dev site: www.myfamilycorner.net (using the Euphoria style) which is forest green. There is one template that you can modify to change all th coloring. But it is currently, hard coded, so changes made are w/ color hex codes at the moment. Of course, this would pose a problem if on a site w/ mulitple styles. One would have to either make a few code modifications, or select neutral colors.
