I know that the service that lets you pull thumbnails that aren't in DMOZ is kind of expensive on an ongoing basis, and I just came across this today... maybe this is old news. I tested it on several sites and it works as long as the site has some level of popularity... won't work on small personal sites that haven't got any traffic that Alexa would pick up.

This was done by putting the following code between the IMG bbcode tags...
http://thumbnails.alexa.com/image_server.cgi?size=large&url=vbadvanced.com/
If you substitute your url where vbadvanced.com is then you'll get the idea. I don't think it would be wise to hotlink to Alexa, but maybe someone can do a hack to suck these images into the system when a new link is created.
