View Full Version : Clarification? vb vs. cmps news settings

I am new to vb as well as vbadvanced, and unsure of a few things. Can you elaborate? Many thanks.

(1)
cmps requires us to set which forum is the news. Makes sense. But then repeats some options. For instance, "Allow HTML" is a setting in the forum itself, and in the cmps general options for news. Does one override the other, and if so, when?

(2) The grammer on the note below leaves me a little confused. Probably because I am not really familiar with vb itself. Again, it's a question of who is controlling what for the news forum.

Allow users to comment on news posts?
Note: Your news forum may not have permissions set to make it a private forum if you wish to allow comments.

(3) Only one attachment? Just curious about why there are special rules for the news/forum (whichever it is).

Thank you in advance.

(or is that, "Thank you in advanced"?)

1). All of these settings are specific to your homepage, and will not affect the forum settings. In the same manner, these homepage settings will not affect your forum settings.

2). That just basically means that you should make sure that user's have permission to reply to threads in that forum if you plan on enabling that opiton. ;)

3). Only 1 attachment is pulled because it would require another query to pull more... I will probably change this in future versions though.

With apologies for using you instead of taking the time to do the experiments... do I understand this correctly.

The issue is:
-I want to use HTML in my news posts, for fine control and one-off stuff.
-Advice on the street says never to enable HTML for posts, due to security.
-I want users to be able to reply/comment

If I set HTML TRUE in both places (vb forum and cmps news), I will always have the desired display. But I should set comments/replies to be moderated, so no jerk slips me a molotov frame or mickey javascript. Da?

If I set HTML TRUE for news, but false for the forum, I'll get my nice display on the front page, but users accessing it via the forums will see the actual html goobledegook. Da?

Possibly there are other solutions/approachs to this connundrum (such as getting a job waiting tables)...?

Many thanks

Yup, you've pretty much got it... Though I'm not sure if I would recommend enabling HTML and then moderating the posts. I'm not sure if that would pose any kind of risk while moderating the posts or not. The kind folks over at vBulletin.com could probably answer that one better than I could though. ;)
