Now that I have my homepage somewhat squared away, I need to ask a question. I need to know how you post news on the front page when you've set your permissions on a news forum to where no one could post / comment. These are the instructions I followed:
If you do not want your new forums to be displayed on your forums index page and do not want to allow users to comment on your news posts or polls - Set "Forum is Active" to no, and "Open for new posts?" to no. If you wish to limit the maximum number of characters displayed before a [read more] link replaces the rest of a news post, you must then edit forum permissions to and make sure Registered, Unregistered / Not Logged In, Users Awaiting Email Confirmation, and any additional groups have permission to view this forum, but not start new threads or post replies. Otherwise the "read more" link will be useless as users will not have permission to view the rest of the thread.
I've done all that. And when I did, I don't see where to post as an admin.
Also, one other thing...If I were to change the cmps_index.php to index.php, it would still read my index.html. How do you go about making this load up in the root of my site?
Thanks for your help

You need to enable permissions so that admins can post in that forum. ;)
As for renaming the file, you'll need to remove/rename your index.html file in order for the index.php file to be recognized. ;)

I did do that....but I don't even see the forum after doing all those modifications. If you want to take a look you can. The forum is called News...and it's on the bottom of the Forum manager.
Thanks

'Act as Forum' and 'Forum is Active' both needed to be set to yes. ;)

ok great I got the news thing to work...
I still am baffled as to make index.php load in the root. I took away the index.html page and tried to run the site but all it did was list all the files on the server and its folders. So how do you make the index.php recognized?
Thanks,

Cpanel licenses are in the 1000's of dollars I have heard. How did you create your MySql Database?

I own a virtual apache server and it has php version 4.3.0. I do all mysql stuff by telnet connecting right to server.

Just making sure here....
Your Index.php file is outside of the forum directory, in the root directory right?

I was just curious about that, cpanel can set up redirects fairly easily
As for telnet'ing into your db... I have some questions for you then! I don't have a telephone modem, strictly broadband. I was trying to use PuTTY to connect to MySQL to restore a backup for hours but eventually wound up calling my host and asking them to do it. I couldn't get the damn thing to work

yup...index.php is in root directory
Hmmm I've never heard of that program. All I can tell you is that I HIGHLY recommend this one:
http://www.vandyke.com/download/
software is called CRT...by far the easiest program for telnet...has a great wizard to put in all the necessary info to connect to your server...or you could use phpmyadmin:
http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/
that works great too if you wanna do it without going through telnet.

I tried the phpMyAdmin thing, it timed out so many times over such a small file that I was ready to headbutt my keyboard :D Thanks though, I'll definitely give that one a go :)

You need to talk to your host about allowing .php extensions to be recognized as index files.

Yep! :) Did that this morning so now it works!
And now...I still am confused over the forums permissions issue. I have people now confused over the 2 forums I have set aside to write news for the front portal...saying that they don't have access to the page. Now...I did what you said...Act As Forum / Forum Is Active is set to yes. So now...in the permissions...for registered/non-registered people...do I set 'can view forum / Can view others threads set to yes or no?

If you want them to be able to view the threads in that forum then 'Can view other's threads' needs to be set to yes. ;)

How do you make it where there is no reply button on the front portal for the news forum?

Users can respond to posts "no"
