I was wondering if anyone here has moved from VBPortal to VBAdvanced? I would love to move multiple sites to VBAdvanced because updating VBPortal is such a pain in the butt.
My biggest hurdle is "sections" and "content". In these 2 areas, we have thousands of articles. What I need is a way to convert these over to vbadvanced. Has anyone done this?

Natas,
I know others have done it but I'm personally not familiar enough with vBPortal to offer much advice. Since vBa uses vBulletin as it's back-end what I would imagine would need to happen is that your articles that are currently being stored in a vBPortal database would need to be copied over into a new vBulletin forum first.

Yes, vbportal is using its own tables to store the articles. I just want a easy way to grab the data from them and put them into a format for vbadvanced.
Copying the data manually is not a option, like I said I have thousands of articles so it would take a very long time.
Also, this would be a great option to offer users who are wanting to convert. Alot of people are upset at vbporal because of the lack of support....having this conversion would get people over here quickly!
If a developer is willing, I can setup a clone of my website(s) to work with

Natas, my time schedule is pretty much filled but I am intriqued by the project. Have an example of a vBPortal page with the articles and sections to take a look at so everybody can get an Idea of the scope involved? My first curiousity would be if there are any elements being stored in the vBPortal tables that do not have a vBulletin thread equilvalent.

I got one simple live site at http://linuxgangster.org
I can make a copy of this site (test.linuxgangster.org or something like that) and give someone here admin access to it with access to the db (or just dump the db)

natas,
As Kevin said, I don't think it would be too hard to copy those articles into a vBulletin forum. Though things would be a little different using the CMPS since it doesn't have a section specifically for articles and such, you could copy some of the blocks (such as the recent threads one) and then use that to pull the threads from that forum and display them with the CMPS. If you'd like to setup a copy of your forum and database on your server, create some new forums for your articles and whatever else on that copy, and then submit a support ticket here with your info I'll be glad to see what I can do. I can't make any promises since it's been years since I've really looked at vBportal, but I wouldn't imagine something like that would be too hard.
How does vBadvanced compare to this portal product, I see they have a lot of modules like Classifieds and so on

How does vBadvanced compare to this portal product, I see they have a lot of modules like Classifieds and so on :confused:In summary they are geared for two different audiences: vBa CMPS is a nice lightweight package that allows the user to easily add on to it while vBPortal tries to be a total solution package that includes it's own article content manager, it's own links directory, and several other internal functions.
Thanks for the explanation, do they support the product as well as you guys do here
Can I add on to the CMS package you guys offer, for example, other available hacks in the marketplace and is their some sort of list of hacks that work with your system

Sorry, but I couldn't tell you about their support as I've never used their product.
There are quite a few modules and other additions available in the hacks and add-on modules forums here. We do also offer vBa Links Directory for $34.99, and hope to have some new products out soon.

Thanks for the explanation, do they support the product as well as you guys do here  Couldn't tell ya' how their support is, I'm not a paying customer (vBPortal is a pay commercial product).
Can I add on to the CMS package you guys offer, for example, other available hacks in the marketplace and is their some sort of list of hacks that work with your system :confused:It'd be hard to compile a list of what hacks work & which don't because CMPS intergrates directly with vBulletin (as opposed to being a stand-alone script like vBPortal that can use vBulletin's data). That means that no changes to your styles or anything else is needed to have CMPS work with your existing vBulletin installation.
OK, thanks for the data guys, and keep up the good work and fast responses, that means a lot!

vB portal is a stand alone product now? Guess that shows how much attention I pay. :p
You still have to have vBulletin to run it right

vB portal is a stand alone product now? Guess that shows how much attention I pay. :pLet me clarify... :p It's a stand alone script in that it pulls it's data from vBulletin rather than intergrating directly into it (kind of like how PhotoPost Pro does it's vB integration). It's why your vBulletin style(s) need to be modified to work explicitly with vBPortal.
You still have to have vBulletin to run it right :confused:Yes.
Now I know why they keep you around here man!
I Respect your know how! :)

One last thing to point out is that there are many more vBAdvanced CMPS modules to be found at both vbulleting.org, vbhackers.com and thebgeek.com, and one final point, you do NOT have to convert any themes/styles you use with vBulletin to work with vBAdvanced!

Do you have any links to the classifieds hacks and other portal type hacks that you feel are great one's?
Thanks!

I use commercial packages from thevbgeek, and all have excellent integration with vBA
GeekMart (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4)
GARS (Gaeek Article and Review System) (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5)
GAL (Geek Auto Link) (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6)
The plugins and products over at vbulletin.org are numerous, just set aside an hour or two and browse. So many of the most powerful ones will either fully support vBA, or have add-ons that will allow integration with vBA.
Wow, thanks for the help, if reputation was enabled I would lay some on you! :)
