...and I don't know how.
Rather than having it show up random threads that I seemingly have no control over, I want to be able to post pictures, etc., there. Is there a place that I can completely control what is in that center column?
Thanks! :D

Yes in you CMPS admin control area there is an area where you decide which forum is your news forum. Pick out the forum you want only for news and then set it so that only you can post what goes in there so you control what exactly is on your front page..;)
Is there a place that I can completely control what is in that center column? yes, your VBACMPS control pannel ;)

Okay, I've been all over that control panel and I cannot find anything that will allow me to control what goes in there. I guess I need explicitly explained baby steps - ??
I see where I can move and edit the News, etc., but don't see where I can change what's in it. In my old version, the guy who installed it for me had a separate forum for me that only I could see that I would put what I wanted in it (typed as a regular thread/post) and it would show up on the front page. Can that be done with this version?

Yes.
Admin CP => vBa CMPS => Default Settings => News Forum ID

Okay, so I've told it to pull the news from my very first category but it's taking from somewhere else. This thing seems to have a mind of its own. I want for threads to show in this middle column from a forum that only I can see and control. What am I doing wrong?
Also, my thread icons are not showing up on the Latest Forum Topics in the right column...what's wrong there?

Your news posts are being pulled from your "Piggie Gossip!" forum, which is what you had set in the admin cp.
As for the icons, go to your Icon Manager in the admin cp and make sure the full URL to each icon is entered there.

I want it to take from my "News" forum which is hidden and directly above the "Piggie Gossip" forum so that would make it forumid 1, right? If not, what should it be?
I just checked and all of my post icons are correctly linked. All of the post icons show up in my forums, just not on the portal page. And some do show up on the portal page, just not all of them.
Come to think of it, a lot of the smilies in the actual posts in that news column are missing, too, but are there when you read them in the forums.
check in your admin pannel in the forums management section.... next to the "news" forums you should see the id, and then just put that number in your cmps admin new section.

Okay -- I finally see that the forumid is at the very, very top of the Forum Manager for that forum. Sheesh -- I wish somebody had told me that.
Now the posts in that middle column are entirely too wide....
