My thoughts and suggestions:

Articles - Category icons.
Imortance: High
References: http://www.tfw2005.com
Ability to upload and apply icons to categories, and then have that icon applied to each individual post, aligned as you wish in the template, and clickable to a listing of all articles in that category.

Articles - Thumbnails.
Imortance: High
References: http://www.tfw2005.com
Ability to only show first thumbnail of attachments aligned left/right, with text wrap. This should show up in cat listings, and on main page. In full story mode, this still shows within the article body, aligned left/right as defined in template, and the rest are shown regular style down below.

Articles - Main Page.
Imortance: High
References: http://www.tfw2005.com
Ability to show the top 10/20/30 articles in "read more" format, with thumbnails and cat icons. Choice of which sub-cats the ones on front page show from (very similar to CMPS News).

Articles - Ability to enter a URL or thread ID
Imortance: Medium (BUT REALLY WANT IT)
References: http://www.tfw2005.com
Ability to enter a URL or thread ID to an already ongoing discussion in the forums. With a magic wand, it would pull the posts into this as comments, and when clicking reply, take you to that thread to post replies from there. Choose "create thread for comments" - Creates thread with article as first post, and uses replys from there as comments. *(I think the VBDrupal system tries to do this, just never worked properly for me).
If nothing like that checked, uses Vblogicles comment system.

Most of my daily news comes from the forums. Right now, we have to create a thread in a closed forum that shows up on front page, so it is formatted properly and credited to staff, and manually link to the thread the members created with the original news and discussion. The above scenerio would knock that out, and be AWESOME.

Articles - Editor's picks.
Imortance: Medium
Ability for Staff/Admins/Mods to mark a given article as an "Editor Pick", and then have a query to call these into a block. Functionality could potentially be used to sticky hot, new, or well done articles on the main page above cat listings. Both "title-to-article" and "Read More" style options (with first thumb and cat icon).

Articles - Main Page.

Edited. I recently started using the "Table Method" as seen for CMPS. This looks like it can do the same thing, so it should be fine.

Ability to use this as your main page
(replace CMPS) Edit - Looks like it can be done, or used in conjunction perfectly.

Notes:
MadebyMary article system as seen on Vbulletin.org. Dont like is as a core system, but, she has some nice layouts. Might want to consider something similar for public release to entice people who cant mod via templating/hacking.

I will post more here in the first thread as I play around.

I will use this post to highlight good ideas that came from others:

Guestbook Module for blogs:
Importance: Low
http://www.vbadvanced.com/forum/showpost.php?p=106077&postcount=3

RSS Feeds:
Importance: High
For Everything and select multiple areas. In the blog world, there is a feed per post, showing comments. Could be cool. That part - NOT HIGH.

Inline Title Changes:
Importance: Low
Generally, all VB Inline modding tools would be fantastic. I know thats a crap load of work tho.

Thanks for the feedback. :)
The list for beta 2 is growing so I can't make any promises right now, but I'll try to get as many of these worked in as I can.

I'm rather fond of the Category Image idea :)
