Greetings from a newb.

I am preparing to start using vBulletin, and would like to hear the pros and cons to leasing versus owning.

Owning seemed to be the obvious answer... at first... but with updates and modifications - now I am wondering if leasing isn't a better option.

Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated greatly!

Doug,

The question really comes down to how long are you planning on running the forums site and are you able to afford $160 upfront. Leasing at $85 a year is cheaper than owning to at least your second year of operations ($85 + $85 = $170 versus $160 + $30 = $190) but by your third year owning becomes the cheaper alternative ($85 * 3 = $255 versus $160 + $30 + $30 = $220). In short, the longer you own the cheaper it gets.

I realize that for some people a difference of a hundred dollars or so over time is no big deal but, for me at least, I'm really running my sites as a hobby with all expenses coming out of my pocket so if I'm able to be in a situation that I can save X dollars in the future by spending Y dollars now I'll do so because it's to my advantage.

(OK, that's my 2 cents at least...... :D )

I was going to purchase VB when I had the oppertunity of taking over the lease of someone else for $20. I was able to pick it up with 6 months remaining.. Year and a half.... $100

Both of my licenses are owned, and if/when I have the need for another, I will buy an owned license. I really don't see the point in buying a leased license... Even if you start a site and within a year or so decide that the site isn't going to work out you can always sell your license. Or, if for some reason you decide you don't like vBulletin (which I highly doubt), then again, you could always sell it. :)

Thanks to all... my plan was/is to own, but I wanted to be sure that it wouldn't be outdated too soon... or the costs to upgrade wouldn't make it worthwhile.

I'll take the advice and go with the owned license... thanks again.

I was pretty much in the same boat as Darkness when I started my "little project", now my only problem is that my renewal date is right after Christmas when I'm ALWAYS broke! :o
