Has this been brought up yet? It would be nice to instant message online buddies from the homepage. Of course, I'm PHP dumb but willing to pay for a good one (good=functional :) ).

there's an IM module over at vborg called bbmessenger. i have it installed on my still messed up newly installed portal. look at the nav bar and you'll see my BuddyIM. its a popup and will not work unless you're registered. my site is not yet open for registration though. i'm not yet done with hacking and adding modules. haven't configured the forums too. :) but you can check my bbmessenger install here.
