What would happen if I deleted a category?

So I have hundreds of categories in my link directory. I found that I no longer need one of the parent categories that most of those sub-categories are under. What would happen if I deleted one of the parent categories? Here's a simple tree to show what I mean:

Index > TopCat1 > Sub Cats > Hundreds of Sub-Cats > etc...

I want to delete TopCat1 but am not sure what would happen... what I'd like to happen is to have all the sub cats move up a level.

Just created some test categories to test this - it deletes all the sub-cats. Not what I was hoping for... oh well.

You could always edit the sub-categories to change their parent category to a different one, and then delete that parent category.
