Hi people,

I am a total newbie with all this. Basically i have a few questions as I am following the readme_vba_cmps but cannot make any sence of how to install a forum.

What is the difference between Vbulletin and Vbadvanced? cos the readme mentions both but i dont know what i need to get up and running.

What I am aiming to achive is a small site which i have designed in HTML in dreamweaver which has a nice small forum attached. What do i need to do to get this? My hosting company do allow php sql etc so dont think there is a problem there.

Please help,

Kev

vBulletin is the forum software. It will run your forums, the private message system, the community calendar, etc. and keeps the database of members/passwords/messages/threads/etc. Most people install the forum into a separate directory, www.example.com/forums, for instance.

vBadvanced is a portal system (CMPS = Content Management & Portal System). At its very basic level it can be used as simply a homepage for your site. The vBa home page can have many modules that show various bits of information. For example, it can show the last X number of posts that were made in your forum, related links directories, number of users registered/online, a small calendar, etc.

If you want to see a basic example of the difference between the two (vB and vBa), go to my site (http://www.vermontoutdoors.net). What you will see is the vBa CMPS home page. vBa pulls the forum information from the vBulletin database and displays it on the home page. Now to see the basics of what vBulletin does, click on the Forum link near the top where it says "Forum - Photo Gallery - etc." The forum page that you see is just vBulletin.

Get the difference now? vBulletin is the power behind the site and the thing that makes the forums work. vBadvanced is the home page. What I have gone over is just the basics of what vB and vBa can/will do. The photo gallery is another software package that was added on in addition to these first two, so don't get confused into thinking that the gallery comes with either of these.
