Replacement variables causing default post icon not displaying

Problem:

Error:
The requested URL /mainpage/images/gradients/gradient_tcat.gif was not found on this server.

The gradient gifs and post icon etc images was not displayed properly. I have replacement variable set to replace images with http://mysite.com/images/ . It looks everything ok until I noticed the default post icon was not displaying if it's set to NO post icon.

The replacement variable option causes lots of trouble. Is there a way to make the gradient gif to work without resorting to Replacement variable?

Background:

I have cmps_index.php placed in /var/www/mainpage and vb forum script in /var/www/html. I have edited the forum path correctly in cmps_index.php

Why bother with a replacement variable at all instead of just making your image paths fully qualified?

How to make it possible? I am new to php. By default, cmps gives me such wrong url.
