Cosmetic change to welcome block

I have the welcome block in the center of my index page. I want to make this block only stretch across half of the middle of the page and then have another module to the right of it. How can I do this?

It's not difficult but does take a little work. You need to learn tables. This is the best thread to get you started on customizing a CMPS page.
