ok, I run a gaming group. In our gaming group we play several different games. It would be nice when posting news that we can seperate the news into different categories, In our case it would be different games. In each News post it would show the category icon which you have uploaded for it, that way people know which game you are talking about. Also when you click on the category icon it would take you to a page which is only News related to that category. If this page was customizable as well, That would be awesome!!

Have you thought of using the Sub-Forums feature of vB. You could have a forum with several sub-forums underneath it each one containing seperate news regarding its subject.

Well, This of course done..but I'm trying to make a site. Not just a Forum.
We utilized the Sub-Forums in that way first thing. But I'm looking for something on the main page. It's very common in CMS/Portals and I was hoping it was possible here. I would much rather use this than vbportal, but because it lacks this option, I'm a bit at a loss.

I've seen the request here a couple times and even once read that it would be in the next release. I'm not sure what happened with that, but this feature would make vbadvanced CMPS untouchable IMO.

Any word on this being planned in the future?

Not really sure if I should help after reading this, hope I don't regret!

An easy hack is to use the forum's id (because it's unique) to display some images instead of the current user's avatar.
Lets imagine you have a Sim Games subforum with the id #5. Create an image for it and name it 5.gif. Do this for all the forums that display as news and store the images where you find appropriate.
Then edit your newsbit template, and replace the code in the newsavatar src for: /path/to/the/cat/images/$news[forumid].gif

But who wants a new forum for every category? Some news sites have over 20 categories. I need this funtionality too. VBPortal used to have it. Slashdot.org has it. I need it for my community site. It will drive my purchase decision for which forum portal to use.

This sounds like you could accomplish this by using new post icons. Both a small version for just the post and larger version to be displayed on the news pages. Of couse it would also take a bit of custom code for the display module but it shouldn't be too hard to do.
