For me the built in 'welcome' block lets users login and shows the avatar, rep, and PM info for logged in users... I just want a box where I can type a welcome message like at this forum: http://www.askmy2cents.com/ and many others... I don't get what I'm missing... I edited my welcome extended template to add a message but I know that's not the 'right' way, for one it can't be collapsed without losing the valuable info for logged in users, and in my example their 'welcome' box is clearly separate from the 'log in' box. I looked if a custom welcome box was an add-on but didn't see any- but like every vbadvanced page I've seen seems to have this?

All you have to do is create a new BB code module and put the content you want in the box just like you would put it in a post. Select a unique name such as "Welcome to the Forum" and save the module. Then edit whatever page you want and place the module at the top of the centre column.
