View Full Version : [Q] What is the max amount of directories?

I have a sql insert with about 6500 directories on 4 levels. The query executes ok, but when I try to browse the links either via ACP or from the url I get a DNS error. What would be the issue here? Too many directories? Admittedly this is a shared development server with not too much muscle... Could that be the bottleneck?
Thanks for any comments,

The maximum number is going to depend on the server, but I don't think too many are going to be able to handle that many directories.

So it seems. I cut down the amount to some 750 and it started working all ok.
Kinda of including the main categories.
I have also established a special drop down field with all 6500 categories :D
Would it be possible to use any standard search string from an external search form searching per each category for the exact option so that the search results would show at the links search results page? The options are index numbered between 1001...7290 and they could be used as the search criteria to match with the exact criteria.
Hereīs an example:
1001 COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES Batteries
1002 COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES Cables n Adapters
1003 COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES Cellular Accessories
1004 COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES Cleaning Kits ... ...

I'm not sure I'm following exactly what you're trying to do here...
I got almost 490 categories to work ok.

Hmm... Itīs a little difficult to explain. I'll get back once the site is live.

Yes. It is a products sub-category index.

I sure hope not =)
Not to mention usability aspects (who reads 6500 categories?! how to find one in the middle of 6500?!), pulling a list that long from the db will make the site crawl!
If a lot of people have performance problems with lists of hundreds of items, what will happen with thousands?
Just for fun, I created a file with a simple line, a sample of the menu option. Then I cloned that line 6500 times. The resulting file has 300KB of text!!!

You're right, but as a dropdown with vB it seems to perform totally ok - as with it does with another script. So... Go figure.

Mikak, most browsers tend to choke on that kind of things.
Ever tried browsing a site where every page is half a MB? Can you imagine the bandwidth costs?

Heh... Ok. That's not quite the case. The text file is currently only used by the merchant when he/she adds a product into the store.
The search for those categories has naturally been divided into plenty-a-many main categories with their own sub-categories.

Oh! It's not public then! =)
