Cannot Get Added modules to work

I have gone through the documentation and have spent hours on these forums. Quite simply what I want to do is have a three column layout, in the middle I want the first module to show my blog feed, and under, my custom post or monthly prize announcement. I have created the modules according to direction , but to no avail. Thanks for the help.

Here is thr prtscreen from the edit module view, this is was done according to the "Custom 1 " example in the documentation.

'Custom 1' isn't a valid template name.

So what is a valid temple name? do you mean add this prefix: adv_portal
