Editing module templates for different styles

I have 3 styles. The default style with 2 other styles under the defualt in a heirchy.

Is there an easy way to edit the content in the hightest level style so that it changes all the styles at once? Instead of having to edit each style.

I have a home page updated news module and I'd like to be able to edit the template once and not for every style.

if you edit the templetes in the "parent" style, all the the sub-styles will inherit the changes.

That's what I thought but it didn't....
Here is a screen shot of my style manager, I think I have the default style set up as the parent...

I know that it generally works. But sometimes I have found that I too must edit each style. I wonder what causes that?
