How involved would it be to create my own template so it looks like a regular webpage without the floating boxes? So basically I would use my own page and just insert the code.

i'd say it'd be on par with editing the look of any part of vb; it's just a matter of sifting thru the existing stuff and finding what you need and figurin out how it goes together.

Why not use a plain old HTML file and link to the aspects you want to use?

That's basically what I was thinking about doing. I just wasn't sure how hard it would be.
What I want to pull out is the last 5 news posts, newest 5 posts and the poll.

Shouldn't be that difficult. Do you want a link to the poll, newest and last or an automatic listing?

Automatic listing, so each time I update it it will automatically do it. I have a basic idea of what the php code would look like, but it would probably be ugly.
