Add Module Confusion

I have the Home page running nps but I am confused about Add a new module.

When I select Add Module in admincp I then get 3 options to add either BBCode, Template or PHP files. I understand what all these are, even though I'm far from knowledgeable about them all, but this confuses me when any hack or module add-on here has the instructions that don't mention any of the above.

Therefore how do I know which option I am to use to add a new module and also especially when the instructions tell you to leave module identifier blank yet an error then comes back saying there is already a blank identifier?????

That's because adding a module was different in 1.x. If a module from 1.x involves uploading a PHP file and selecting it, then you would select a PHP file module. Otherwise it will be a template module. As for the identifier, if it says to leave it blank, just use whatever you would like. In 1.x that option was only used to identify a couple of the modules, but is now used for settings and a few other things.
