Is this possible?

(sorry for the lame title but I couldn't think of something better...)
I have vba CMPS with vba gallery and vba links on my site and some other mods (such as QuoteIt!) as well. A menu bar at the top provides navigation to different parts of my site. This menu bar is in the header template.
It would be really useful if whenever there was something new in each category (post, image, link etc depending on the category) an icon (such as "new") appeared next to it's title in the menu bar.
What do you think? Can it be done?
(please have in mind that I don't have php or (x)html knowledge (just a little bit) and try to explain it like you are talking to a complete idiot!)

Yes you can do it with conditionals. I dont know the code. But I have seen it done.
