    So the RSS Cache Directory is : /forum/modules/cacherss ??
    If the cacherss folder is within the modules folder then it will probably be the similar to your cmps index path with the '/modules/cacherss' tacked onto the end.

    It's too bad that this module works some times, but not others. It was working fine for a couple hours but then stopped and I started getting the:

    Fatal error: file_put_contents cannot write in file. in /modules/rss_cmps_curl.php on line 125
    I need something dependable so I will have to keep looking.

    The fact that it is unable to write to your file system is a problem either with your permissions or the path hasn't been set correctly. The only other possibility is that your host is doing something to prevent it from writing. Myself and many others have been using this module for a number of years w/o any issues so I'm fairly confident the problem you are encountering, though reported by the module, isn't a problem that's caused by the module.

    No matter though. About the only other module I know of makes use of Carp (you'll need to install that) to work. Do a search here and you should be able to locate it.

    The path I have is correct and the permissions are 777. I don't know what else to do. The host says it should work, as he is not blocking anything.

    At one point is was working but then stopped, and I got the error. Later I tried again and it worked for a couple hours but again it stopped and the error came back.

    *shrugs*

    It is probably just what I'm looking for but for some reason it is behaving oddly.

    You can try looking here to see if that helps. Your host will need to support the iconv() capability. You'll also need to choose the correct character set for the conversion.

    Here is a path.php file you can use to find out the path to the rsscache folder you create.

    Copy this to a file and save, then upload to your rsscache folder on your webserver.

    PHP Code:
    <?php

    if ($_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'])
    {

    $path $_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'];
    }
    else if (
    $_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'])
    {

    $path $_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'];
    }
    else
    {
        echo
    'We are sorry, but this script is unable to determine your forums path.';
        exit;
    }

    echo
    substr($path0, (strlen($path) - 14));

    ?>
    Then go to that url and see what is displayed.

    If you placed the folder in the root (public_html) --> http://www.mywebsite.com/rsscache/path.php

    If you placed it in your modules --> http://www.mywebsite.com/forums/modu...cache/path.php

    is there anyway to use this with a server that has curl disabled? ie integrating the code from the previous version of the module?

    Yes, you can grab the 3.5 version and copy the code from that and replace the curl stuff. Interesting, most host seem to moving towards curl and not allowing access via the older method.

    ok gonna need help with that part as I am sure this is not gonna be the only time this happens, by the way everything loaded right the problem was with the module loaded for the page it would only come up with a blank white page. which led me to here. I saw that you mentioned to someone about checking for curl support. so I checked that has to be my problem.

    thanks again for your help in advance.

    ok so far I am coming up with these edits:

    find:
    Code:
    s:17:"rss_cmps_curl.php"
    replace with:
    Code:
    s:17:"rss_cmps2.php"

    the find and remove:
    Code:
     else
                    { // get the remote feed
                            $curl_handle = curl_init($file);

                            curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1);
                            curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, 2);
                            curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_HEADER, false);

                            // fetch the remote feed
                            $file = curl_exec($curl_handle);

                            curl_close($curl_handle);
                            unset($curl_handle);

                            return !$file ? false : $file;
                    }
            }
    }

    find:
    Code:
    if(!function_exists('rss_get_contents'))
    {
            function rss_get_contents($file)
            {
    replace with:
    Code:

    {

    find:
    Code:
    function rss_get_contents($file)
    replace with:
    Code:

    You really can't edit the .module file. The way to do what you want is to install the curl version and then edit the php file. You can copy the code from the old module file and then paste it into the php file. Hope that makes sense. There's no real need to rename the php file unless you want to.

    Hi,

    At one point I had this module working pretty good. It would cause the page to hang at times, but it would still work. BTW, is there a limit to how many of these modules I can use on a single page? I had around 10 or so.

    Now I'm getting a blank page though. The only thing that I did was removed the default site navigator module (complete uninstall), because I was installing a new one. As soon as I removed the default site navigator module, I got this problem

    It's definitely a problem with this module though, because if I remove all of these RSS modules from my homepage, it works fine. I'm thinking that somehow some code got deleted when I was removing the site navigator, but I don't know how to check that.

    Pretty much all you should need to do is to replace this
    Code:
    if(!function_exists('rss_get_contents'))
    {
    	function rss_get_contents($file)
    	{
    		if (strncmp('http:', strtolower($file), 5) !=  0)
    		{	// fetch the cached file
    			$file = file($file);
    			return !$file ? false : implode('', $file);
    		}
    		else
    		{	// get the remote feed
    			$curl_handle = curl_init($file);

    			curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1);
    			curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, 2);
    			curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_HEADER, false);

    			// fetch the remote feed
    			$file = curl_exec($curl_handle);

    			curl_close($curl_handle);
    			unset($curl_handle);

    			return !$file ? false : $file;
    		}
    	}
    }
    with this
    Code:
    if(!function_exists('rss_get_contents'))
    {
    	function rss_get_contents($file)
    	{
    		$file = file($file);
    		return !$file ? false : implode('', $file);
    	}
    }

    ok done still not showing up however the blank white page is gone but still the module not showing up. It looks as though its attempting to write to the cache directory, but its not writing anything to the cache file. meaning writing a 0kb cache file (blank) so naturally the module wont show up in the index page nor the preview window.

    the cache file it creats is chmod 666 is that right? the cache folder itself has already been chmodded 777. both of these have been tested using the ftp client.

    I am wondering if its the same problem that that other guy had and he had to make up a script to chmod the cache directory usng the php script?

    this is what the template looks like now. Have not renamed just edited it.

    Code:
    if(!function_exists('file_put_contents'))
    {
    	function file_put_contents($filename, $data, $file_append = false)
    	{
    		$fp = @fopen($filename, (!$file_append ? 'w+' : 'a+'));
    		if(!$fp)
    		{
    			trigger_error('file_put_contents cannot write in file.', E_USER_ERROR);
    			return;
    		}

    		fputs($fp, $data);
    		fclose($fp);
    	}
    }

    if(!function_exists('rss_get_contents'))
    {
    	function rss_get_contents($file)
    	{
    		$file = file($file);
    		return !$file ? false : implode('', $file);
    	}
    }

    // Set up the key paramters before we get underway

    // location of the rss live feed
    $rss_feed = $mod_options['portal_rss_feed'];

    If you aren't getting any errors and the file is empty then it's possible it's a permission problem, though if the folder is really 777 then a file permission of 644 or 666 should be OK.

    What's the url of the feed you are trying to use?

    Do you have a link to your page? Custom style?
