Default Problem Editing Link when Required Custom Fields are Not Displayed in All Categories

If you have a custom field which only displays in SOME of the categories, and is a REQUIRED FIELD in those categories - I've run into a problem:

When I edit a link in a category which does NOT display that custom field, and try to CHANGE the link category to one that DOES use that custom field, it won't let me save the changes because the REQUIRED field has no data, and there is no way to enter any data because it is not displayed on the edit page, since it wasn't used in the previous category.

I hope I said that clearly.
    Thanks.

By the way, this is NOT a critical issue for me. I just made the field a required field in ALL the categories, as a temporary work-around.
