its difficult to find very basic instructions, so this is my last hope. I have spent time searching the forums, so sorry if this is classed as spam

instructions for CMPS are given in the FAQs and User Manual (in the Member's Area) sections of this website, so it is not difficult to find these.

I do not understand your question. You want to rename the cmps_index.php file? You can do that via FTP.

I'm really not sure what you're asking here... Could you please elaborate a little?
And you certainly would not want to rename the cmps_index.php file to index.html. If you want the CMPS to be the first thing your members see when they visit your site then you would want to rename the file to index.php.
