When Modules are used in left or right column (which are not that wide), VeryLongTextWithoutAnyWhitepaceToBreakApartPostedBySomeUser can break the design.

I therefore suggest to have settings for max. characters and call fetch_word_wrapped_string()

Which modules are you suggesting this change for exactly? The main two that I'm aware of that are somewhat known for issues with long strings are the recent threads and news archive, both of which have settings to allow you to limit the title.

I came across this issue in the Current Polls module.

Currently I intend to use a plugin to fix this, but I'd prefer smth. built-in

Ahhh... I was thinking afterwards that the Current Poll module was the next most likely candidate. I'm assuming that options to limit the number of characters in the poll question and poll choices should do the trick though, right?
